The other night, a group of people broke into the Chevy dealership next to where I work and stole 31 sets of wheels off of new cars. Today, the express techs at my dealership spent all of their spare time installing wheel locks on all of our inventory.

You know these guys were pros because they had to plan ahead and buy so many cinder blocks.

Also, thieves suck, although this is a fairly impressive heist.

I imagine there will be lots of older Chevy trucks rolling around Mexico with shined new GM wheels and tires.

Probably not, much easier to scrap them out.

Normally they just leave them on the rotors on the ground...

I give them points for execution, but I’m not sure I see the overall strategy here that leads to the profit part.

Selling them would be the quickest way to get caught unless you sold them piecemeal and took them a long ways away to do it. Even then, there’s only so much demand for OEM wheels. Selling them scrap and netting a few grand is probably the way to do it, but even then you’ve got to dismount 31 sets of tires, and you’re still going to have to scrap them piecemeal to multiple metal buyers over multiple trips spread out over time. Tires would also have to be sold slowly over time someplace else. Given the time and effort to do all of that, along with taking them in the first place (which presumedly was done with more than a person or two), it strikes me as a lot of work for a few grand split between however many people and spread out over time.

I’m not sure I see this paying better than getting a job.

I didn’t think there was enough demand for piecing out OEM wheels either, but my friend seems to think that these 20" chrome Chevy wheels net quite a sum when sold as a set of 4 because Chevy guys like to put them on older trucks. Also, any shady used tire shop could easily add these brand new tires to their inventory and sell them for 100% profit. I don’t know the thieves plans, but I’m sure they didn’t go through all of this without having a plan  on the back end. From what the article says, they have already likely done this a few times in texas

I’ve done the newer wheels on an older truck with my former gmt400 suburban , and even then the going rate was a couple hundred dollars for a set of  newer Escalade wheels with usable rubber. I wonder if the 20s go for a lot more?

No clue, but even at 200$ per set, they have 31 sets. I added pictures of a variety of 2019 Chevy wheels to the original post if your curious what they might look like.

Plot twist, Chevy corporate stole the wheels just to sell them right back to the same dealer.

Used tire shops are often fences for these kinds of scores. Only those “in the know” get offered the hot goods.
